A Global Organisation

 ...continued from case studies
Remote Forensics is an ideal solution to implement when an organisation has global operations but often those sites are inaccessible and difficult to reach especially if time of of the essence.

The petrochemical organisation in this study has multiple incidents across the globe and currently flies an investigator and forensic analyst out to each incident. This is very expensive, not very carbon friendly and can mean that the response time is prolonged when flights are not always instantly available and visas have to organised.

Cost savings

Calculating the cost savings for this organisation was only part of the benefits of implementing the Remote Forensics solution. The other major benefit for them was the additional quantity of work that could be processed.

The savings below were calculated on 10 PODs in local locations with 6 incidents per annum, 15 in medium distant locations and 12 incidents per annum and 15 PODs in long haul locations having six incidents per annum.

A summary of the savings made

Actual travel expenses saved per annum £277,200
Man-hours freed to work instead of travel 3,540
Potential extra chargeable income from staff £1,062,000
Number of extra jobs done per annum 221

Internal Hosting

This organisation decided that it would suit them to host FIMS internally. This option is slightly more expensive but one that is wholly appropriate for this situation.

PODs are located in a rack in each of the designated countries of risk and given a single IP address and power, although the power is not activated. When an incident triggers the use of the system, the forensics analyst brings the POD up remotely.

The technician on the remote site (we call them the 1st responder) is given full instructions via FIMS by the forensic analyst on which machines or media need processing, whilst maintaining evidential continuity using the paperwork pack generated by FIMS. As soon as the first responder has made the media available in the POD, the analyst in the forensic lab can image and analyse the data immediately without any delays or issues about removing evidence from site.
